Weak Home Construction Hurts Utah Small Businesses

(Utah Pulse) A new report from Zions Bank says that the weakening home construction sector in Utah is hurting other small businesses involved in the construction business. The Zions Bank Small Business Index uses new home permits as one indicator of the economic health of small businesses in Utah. The report says builders were too aggressive in adding new home inventory, leading to a slowdown in that sector.

by Michael O'Malley, Marketing Communications, USTAR

<p>The life of the inventor can be a lonely one. There are hours in the lab or the shop with nothing but your creativity and persistence for company. Ideas and breakthroughs are exciting, but they don’t make for much of a business or emotional support network. For innovators in Utah, Saturday, April 19th, should prove a revitalizing break from the solitary routine.

Vacant Office Space Increasing in the Salt Lake Valley

(Utah Pulse) New numbers from Commerce CRG show that the office vacancy rate in the Salt Lake Valley is starting to inch up. The first quarter of 2008 saw an 11.4-percent vacancy rate compared to 10.8-percent at the end of 2007. Mike Richmond of Commerce CRG says that just shows Utah is not immune to the economic slowdown hitting the rest of the nation. “We’re still hanging in there, but we did see some slowing in the first quarter compared to the first quarter a year ago. We saw about a 50-percent reduction in office space that was absorbed and our lease rates are starting to flatten out.”

Former Prime Minister of Australia to Speak at Zions Bank's International Trade and Business Conference

Why is it important to “go global?” If your business isn't taking advantage of international opportunities, you're missing out on some real potential demand for your product.

According to statistics from the U.S. Commercial Service's Export Assistance Center, 70 percent of the world's purchasing power and 95 percent of its population are outside the United States. What's more, jobs related to exporting pay 20 percent more, on average, than those not related to shipping across borders. Indeed, international trade is one of the hottest areas of economic growth for Utah and Zions Bank’s 7th annual International Trade and Business Conference, slated for May 20 at the Downtown Marriott in Salt Lake City, is setting the stage for further growth.

The Delta Merger - Beyond the Bottom Line

<em>by Lane Beattie, President and CEO, Salt Lake Chamber</em>

Last week, Delta Air Lines reaffirmed their commitment to Salt Lake City by announcing their intent to merge with Northwest Airlines. We all felt relief and cheered because they will maintain Salt Lake City as their primary gateway to the western U.S.

The benefits of the merger have been widely acknowledged – more long-term job security for the 3,000 Utah jobs impacted by the merger, enhanced global access, improved economic development and tourism opportunities, and a more competitive global airline. As a result of the merger, Delta Air Lines will be stronger, even as Utahns continue to benefit from the presence of three discount carriers in the local market.

USTAR Tech Outreach Makes the Connections

<em>by Michael O'Malley, USTAR Marketing and Communications</em>

As one of the most entrepreneurial states in the nation, Utah has its share of new and growing businesses with potentially market-leading technology under development. However, many up-and-coming companies that show great promise have difficulty focusing on key markets, developing the management “bench strength” to grow, connecting with the early-stage investment community, or finding growth synergies with other companies. Where can some of them turn for help? USTAR’s Technology Outreach and Innovation Program (TOIP).

Jeff Thredgold's Tea Leaf - "Bumps In the Road" and "Inflation Ugly"

<em>Written by Jeff Thredgold, CSP, President, Thredgold Economic Associates</em>

Conventional wisdom within the economic forecasting community suggests that a modest U.S. recession is currently underway. Such wisdom (the term used loosely) also suggests that a return to noticeable U.S. economic growth is likely during 2008’s second half, with a return to still more impressive performance during 2009.

To use a driving analogy, the consensus of economists saw the economy cruising comfortably at a 50 mile per hour speed during 2004-2006…saw it slow to around 30-35 mph in 2007…and see it currently stalled by the side of the road undergoing “repairs.”

Media coverage of the war in Iraq has brought the Middle East into family rooms, classrooms and dinner table conversations. But there’s still a lot more to learn about the misunderstood region and a lot of myths to combat, says Linda Adams of the University of Utah’s Middle East Center.

Going Green: Utah's First Wind Farm Takes Shape in Spanish Fork Canyon

Utah's first official wind farm is taking shape in Spanish Fork Canyon and when completely online in August, its nine wind towers will generate 18.9 megawatts of power daily—enough to supply Spanish Fork and possibly Mapleton.

David Anderson, Spanish Fork's planning director, says the wind farm project is being co-developed by Wasatch Wind, a Heber City-based company, and Edison Mission Energy, a subsidiary of Edison International, headquartered in Rosemead, California. The majority of the wind farm is on Spanish Fork City property and the city provided a financial incentive to give the project a boost on its financing.

A Private Sector Approach to Health Reform

<em>by Lane Beattie, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber</em>

Many have heard the admonition that when you come to a fork in the road, take it. The business community arrived at this fork earlier this year when it became clear that state-government-lead health system reform would take time. We support Gov. Huntsman and the Legislature’s efforts to enact meaningful reform and will take significant steps in the private sector to achieve substantive progress and will be an active participant in the process. At the same time, we in the business community have been asking what we can do privately to reform a broken system. Utah businesses can no longer afford the staggering increases in health care premiums. The Salt Lake Chamber joins other Utahns in calling for a more sensible and sustainable system that will contain costs, expand access, and improve medical outcomes.

Weathering the Economic Downturn

Forget about the woes on Wall Street. On Main Street U.S.A. the fundamentals of starting or running a business or raising capital haven’t really changed much, even in the midst of a slowing economy and tighter credit policies—especially in Utah.

In fact, a <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2008/04/29/cities-recession-places-forbeslife-cx_jz_0429realestate.html" target="_blank">Forbes Magazine</a> article last week named Salt Lake City among America’s “recession-proof” cities. The article states, "Though Salt Lake City's unemployment rate is rising, it's still among the lowest of the country's 50 largest cities. ... The state is still creating jobs, just not as quickly as its labor force is growing. A November 2007 report from the U.S. Conference of Mayors projected that Salt Lake City would be one of the few large cities in the country not to suffer a decline in gross metropolitan product from the mortgage crisis."

<em>Written by Jeff Thredgold, CSP, President, Thredgold Economic Associates</em>

Perhaps a month ago, forecasting economists were largely split as to whether the U.S. was in, or would soon enter, a recession. The collective view clearly moved into the recession camp on April 4 with a reported decline of 80,000 jobs in March, combined with an additional 67,000 jobs lost over the two prior months…

The 2008 Elections – Good for Business?

<em>by Robin Riggs, Vice President and General Counsel of the Salt Lake Chamber</em>

Winston Churchill said, “You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.” This admonition is a good benchmark for those hoping to be elected this year to represent the business community. It seems that far too many politicians only say what they believe their current audience wants to hear. Instead, we should be electing men and women who are willing to take an unflinching stand on the most critical issues of our day: health system reform, energy resources, immigration, transportation funding, and education.

New Center to Help Utah Small Businesses Win Federal R&D Grants

A new resource to help small businesses across the state win a larger share of federal research and development funding will be available in June, thanks to the efforts of USTAR, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), the Small Business Administration (SBA), and the Salt Lake Community College Miller Business Resource Center.

Despite substantial funding available, very few Utah small businesses are successfully pursuing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Science Technology Transfer and Research (STTR) funding from the U.S. federal government. With participation from 13 separate federal agencies, the SBIR program is the largest source of early-stage technology financing in the U.S., with $2 billion allocated for fiscal year 2008. Nonetheless, in 2004, Utah received only 0.53% of the total dollars awarded nationally for the SBIR program. Another $200 million is available through the related STTR program.

State leaders at Utah's International Trade and Diplomacy Office (ITDO) have taken Gov. Huntsman's economic plan to heart, completing trade missions to each of the four key countries in 2007. I’ve worked closely with Bob for just over four years in his role as the Executive Director of the Downtown Alliance. He has led the Alliance since the start, a phenomenal 16 years of progress for Utah’s largest city. Bob guided downtown economic development through significant events and changes like the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, the introduction of TRAX light rail, the development of The Gateway mixed-use development, and the current resurgence of investment in the city core.

Leadership Qualities that Distinguish Women

<em>By Lavanya Mahate, Program Director, Women’s Business Center</em>

Leadership is not defined simply by a position, but rather by the ability to set and articulate a vision and then to energize people to achieve that vision. Both women and men make great leaders and it is difficult to isolate leadership characteristics. Still, I decided to ask the question of several outstanding female leaders.

I learned that many prominent female leaders in Utah bring distinct personality and motivational strengths to leadership roles – and they do so with a style that is rewarded in today's workplace. These women leaders share a strong profile. They are assertive, convincing, empathetic, willing to take risks, outgoing, flexible and feel compelled to get things done.

What do 2,500 public officials, 21 Utah cities, 47,000 attendees and EDCUtah have in common? The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) convention, held last week in Las Vegas.

One of the 10 largest conventions in the U.S., ICSC is a huge event with significant implications for retail economic development across the globe. Consequently, EDCUtah, the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) and delegations from 21 Utah cities and towns converged at the convention to pitch the home turf to retailers and shopping mall developers.

The Pros and Cons of Incubators

(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)--Without a doubt, new businesses face numerous challenges, and chiefly among them is capital. If you are a seasoned entrepreneur, this is hardly earth-shattering news. But if you are a budding entrepreneur with an idea that will revolutionize the planet and don't know where to begin, you may want to look into the idea of incubators.

What's the Best Age to Start a Business?

(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)-- At what age or stage of your life are you ideally suited to be an entrepreneur? Is it when you're a teenager living under your parents' roof with nothing to lose, or is it when you're 23, newly married, and full of hope? Maybe it's when you're 27 — a bit more mature and experienced with some connections and a little money in your pocket. Or perhaps the best time to start a business is when you're 45 with 20 years of business experience, $200,000 in the bank and a wealth of contacts you can leverage.

Guerrillas In the Midst

(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)--About 20 years ago, I happened upon a piece of research in a trade journal that claimed each of us is exposed to about 350 advertising messages a day. That seemed somewhat shocking, even to an advertising enthusiast like myself. About a year ago, I encountered another magazine article suggesting we are now exposed to over 1,500 ad messages a day. This time I wasn't particularly surprised, considering how technology has overpowered our lives.

(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)--I was fortunate enough to have a good reputation with a few friends.
(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)--The scenario is all too familiar: A conference room filled with prospective investors. A two or three-day agenda of hopeful executives, each preparing to make that all-important 10 minute pitch. While there's plenty of money to be invested in technology ventures, the companies who succeed in getting investment continue to be a small percentage of the ventures who are seeking new funds.

(<a href="http://www.launchutah.com" target="_blank">Launch Magazine</a>)-- More than 10 years ago, I was first asked by Brad Bertoch to help shape the presentation and strategic thinking of a young technology company seeking venture capital as a volunteer mentor for the Wayne Brown Institute. Since then I have served as a volunteer for the Miller Business Innovation Center, the University Venture Fund and several other organizations and schools. My observation is that these assigned mentoring relationships often dissolve after the required service. Why don't these valuable relationships persist?
