Google Wants to Scrub Child Porn from the Internet

Here’s a cool use of big data. Google plans to use an algorithm to get child porn off the internet.

Geekosystem reports
the initiative from Google will help identify images of children being abused. The program will also keep those images from showing up in search results and could help law enforcement identify and track those responsible.
Google plans to make their existing database available to other search providers, who could use it to prune their search listings and ensure that images which have been flagged with an electronic fingerprint indicating they are child porn don’t show up in their search listings. It could also help law enforcement agencies take action against the awful monsters who post and share such images online.

In addition, to their own database Google is looking for other ideas, setting up a $2 million fund to incentivize the development of more effective tools for screening child porn and keeping it off the Internet. As someone who uses the Internet like, way too much everyday, it’s nice to know that the big dogs on the block are doing their part to clean up the neighborhood.

Talk about will of the people. More than 2/3 of Utahns want John Swallow impeached.

A new poll from Utah Data Points finds 72% of Utah voters want the House to begin formal impeachment proceedings against the embattled Attorney General. Another 78% say John Swallow should resign from office, while only 22% want him to remain.

Other highlights from the poll:

  • John Swallow’s favorability is extremely low, now sitting at 12%  (combining “somewhat” and “strongly” favorable).  Less than 2% respond “strongly favorable.”

  • News of the accusations against Swallow is widespread among voters, and folks who have heard about it overwhelmingly believe that Swallow has committed ethical or legal infractions.  87% of Utah voters have “heard, read, or seen anything recently about the accusations,” and of this group, 34% think Swallow has done something illegal and 63% respond that he has done something unethical.  Less than 4% believe that Swallow has done nothing unethical.

  • When the roughly one quarter of Utah voters who do not want impeachment to begin are asked why not, 62% say that the legislature “should wait until the criminal investigations are complete.”  Only 4% say so because they “don’t believe the accusations.”

  • The electoral consequences of beginning impeachment proceedings now are low. When asked if their own legislator voted to begin impeachment proceedings, a plurality of Utah voters (35%) say that doing so would increase their support for the legislator, while a majority (56%) say it would “neither increase nor decrease my support.”  Only 9% of voters respond that doing so would decrease their support.

  • Finally, at the end of the sequence of questions we asked, “Thinking about everything you have read or heard about the John Swallow situation, which of the following comes closest to your view of what should happen right now?”  78% say Swallow should resign and 22% say he should stay in office.

So as part of my morning news routine, I make check the most popular trending videos on YouTube every day or so. What should greet me in the most popular playlist this morning but a video of our very own Miss Utah (Marlow Stern) fielding a question on women in the work place in the current economic climate.

It’s being called a “facepalming” moment because she’s not, perhaps, as articulate as others might like her to be … but you’ve still got to admire her poise once she realizes that her answer is going to erupt embarrassingly across the Internetz.

(And of course, as a superficial male, she leaves plenty of other things to admire too.)

Smashburgerbrings its fresh approach to Midvale when it opens its new location on Wednesday, June 26th, at 7020 Union Park Ave. Smashburger’s juicy burgers are smashed fresh, served delicious, along with shakes, tempting sides and regional menu items crafted to please local’s palates. This is the fifth Smashburger to open in Utah.

Currently, Smashburger has four locations in Utah including Sugarhouse, West Jordan, Provo and Salt Lake International Airport. Each Utah Smashburger features a regional menu created with regional flavors and tastes in mind. The Utah menu includes the Beehive Burger and Beehive Chicken Sandwich. Made with fresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef®, the handcrafted Beehive Burger is smashed, seared and topped with honey BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and haystack onions on an egg bun. Similarly topped, the Beehive Chicken can be ordered grilled or crispy.

“We designed our menu to allow for regionally-inspired adaptation,” says Smashburger Founder & Chief Concept Officer, Tom Ryan. “This means we can localize parts of our menu to include items with regional flavors and ingredients, such as the Beehive Burger in Utah and Sin City in Las Vegas.”

At Smashburger, the secret is in the smash.  It starts with 100-percent fresh, never frozen, Angus Beef and is smashed on a 400 degree flat grill to sear in the juicy flavor. To further the “better burger” experience, the delicious burgers are served on toasted artisan buns and topped with a selection of the freshest produce, real cheeses, and highest-quality condiments.

Smashburger’s signature recipes and create-your-own burgers are smashed fresh, served delicious every time. But Smashburger is more than just burgers. Customers can also enjoy a selection of tender marinated grilled or crispy chicken sandwiches, grilled and split hot dogs, and fresh tossed signature salads, along with a variety of irresistible sides including rosemary and garlic-seasoned Smashfries, fried pickles, Haystack Onions, and Veggie Frites (flash-fried and seasoned carrot sticks and green beans). The restaurant will also serve a selection of non-alcoholic beverage including hand-spun shakes and IBC® root-beer floats in frosted mugs.

“We are excited to expand our presence in the Beehive state,” says David Prokupek, Chairman & CEO of Smashburger. “More Utahns will see that we are not your typical burger concept. We offer better burgers in a more modern and exciting atmosphere.”
