Women of the Mountains Second International Conference Hosted by UVU

With the goal of sharing knowledge about the global status of women in mountain communities worldwide, and a focus on women in leadership roles working to advance sustainable development, UVU hosted the Second International Women of the Mountains Conference. Over a 100 attendees participated in this three day event, co-organized by Dr. Rusty Butler, Associate Vice-President, International Affairs and Diplomacy, UVU and greeted by Dr. Matthew Holland, President of Utah Valley University.

Day one involved a pre-conference workshop for Utah high-school students on gender issues, while day two and three included a wide range of presentations including : Engagement of Women’s Organizations in Governance, by Dr. Alexey Tikhomirov, Principal Inter-Regional Adviser, United Nations, and The Mountain Partnership and the Rocky Mountain States, by Dr. Douglas McGuire and Olman Serrano, outgoing and incoming Coordinators of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat in Rome, Italy.

Dr. William Sederburg, Utah Commissioner of Higher Education delivered a keynote address on The Role of Education in Promoting Sustainable Mountain Development. Further topics included an ambassadorial roundtable involving His Excellency Goran Chandra Acharya, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, His Excellency Dr. Abdujabbor Shirinov, Ambassador of Tajikistan to the U.S., and His Excellency Dr. Meret Orazov, Ambassador of Turkemenistan to the U.S.
