Figuring out finances as a small business owner can be daunting. Get help from the experts on a wide range of topics at Salt Lake Community College’s Financing Your Business conference. Learn about everything from credit card fees to financial statements. There are four sessions on different topics. Attendees choose one session per hour, for three total. A lunch with the session leaders on the topic of start-up and growth capital follows the sessions. The keynote speaker is Sheila Camarella, Key Bank senior vice president.




“Owning a small business comes with plenty of challenges, like finding, making and managing money. The Financing Your Business conference answers some of the questions surrounding small business ownership,” said Lowell Baggaley, Utah Small Business Development Center interim director.




The June 15 conference goes from 8 a.m. to one. The lunch is from 12:15 to 1 p.m. and registration and networking is from 7:30 to 8 a.m. The conference is $25, which includes lunch. The conference is at the Miller Free Enterprise Center, on SLCC’s Miller Campus, 9750 S. 300 West in Sandy.


Sessions


Keynote Speaker — Sheila Camarella


Sheila M. Camarella is Senior Vice President and Sales Leader over Business Banking at Key Bank. In her current role, Sheila serves as a member of the Utah District Senior Leadership Team and partners with the Retail Banking, Private Banking, and Middle Market segments. Sheila is directly responsible for growing revenue in the Utah District through the seamless delivery of products and services to businesses located along the Wasatch Front and Utah County.


Session 1 — Finding the Right Funding for your Business - David Chase


Finding the right financing or finding ANY financing for that matter is one of the most difficult aspects of starting and building a solid small business. Learn the difference between debt financing and investor funding and determine which is right for you.


Session 2 — Understanding and Using Your Financial Statements in Management of Your Business - Shannon Beck, CEO, Professional Accounting Solutions


This session is designed to introduce financial statements to existing and potential business owners to increase understanding of the information that is generated from internal accounting software. Attendees will be introduced to the uses of the financial statements, basic principles, the types of statements, how they are interrelated and analyzing statements.


Session 3 — Understanding and Minimizing Merchant Credit Card Fees — Todd Richardson, iTransact Inc


Maximizing cash flows by understanding the ins and outs of accepting payment by credit card. Specifically, understanding merchant account fees, negotitating a good deal, understanding the merchant's risk, and the morst efficient and effective way to take credit card payments.


Session 4 — Tax Implication of Business Entities - Richard Tomlinson, CPA, Certified Tax Resolution Specialist


Choosing the appropriate form of entity in which to operate a business is complex decision. Learn more about the pros and cons of each type of entity and the impacts on your business and personal taxation.


Lunch — How to Get Your Share of Start-Up and Growth Capital - Panel of Local Business Experts


This panel is designed to help individuals find the capital they need to finance a new venture or grow an existing business. If lack of money is keeping you from building and growing the business of your dreams, you do not want to miss this information-packed discussion. Learn which loan programs are available for small business through banks, microenterprise lenders and others you may not know about.
