One Sweet Slice, a South Jordan business that launched with the help of the Zions Business Resource Center, is the winner of last night’s episode of “Cupcake Wars” on the Food Network. Owner Janell Brown will receive a $10,000 prize for her top entries.

For six years, Brown had been making “extreme” custom cakes and cupcakes out of her home. When it was time to take her operation out of the basement and into a storefront, Brown consulted the Zions Business Resource Center. There, director Beth Holbrook offered her resources and expertise to help her develop a business plan and apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration loan. One Sweet Slice opened at 10600 S. Redwood Rd. in June 2011 and online at www.onesweetslice.com.

Brown’s cupcakes and wedding cakes have already won multiple awards locally and have been featured in several regional magazines and national blogs. Along with cupcakes, One Sweet Slice specializes in wedding cakes, birthday cakes and cake-decorating birthday parties.

For aspiring entrepreneurs like Brown, the Zions Bank Business Resource Center is open for walk-ins and by appointment Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the mezzanine level at 310 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City. The center offers a publications library, business plan templates, computer workstations and knowledgeable staff ready to assist clients in their business endeavors — all free of charge. The center can be reached at 801-594-8245, or online at www.resources.zionsbank.com.

Since opening in 2006, Zions Bank’s Business Resource Center has assisted more than 5,000 individuals with tools to help them create and expand new and existing businesses.

Of the clients served over six years, 65 percent were start-ups, and 80 percent were in need of business plan development.

“Janell’s success on ‘Cupcake Wars’ exemplifies the mission of Business Resource Center — to help local people with big ideas reach their business goals,” said Holbrook. “We’re proud to have helped Janell take her home-based business to the next level.”
