Our nation has always been enriched by the diverse groups of people who call the United States their home. The same holds true for our state. Even in its early days, Utah attracted residents from many different nations. Today, Utah continues to be a place where immigrants and refugees come to pursue the American Dream.

Utah businesses are also aware of this trend, and diversity in the workplace has become a competitive advantage. Companies are incorporating diversity into their long-term strategic plans, goals and objectives. Managers are becoming increasingly accountable for implementing comprehensive diversity plans that will translate into a better understanding of the company’s market and workforce.

If you feel your company could benefit from such a plan, work with the Human Resources department to promote a company culture that empowers employees to engage in a knowledge-based environment. Such a culture helps employees know they are respected and encouraged to contribute from their points of view and cultural identities.

Following are some additional ways your company can benefit from diversity:

Connecting with your target market — Diversity shows your company’s willingness to diversify and helps your target market better identify with your product and service.

Fostering understanding — A diverse workforce can provide insight into your target market so you can identify their wants and needs more clearly.

Building loyalty — When customers see your company’s true commitment to community, their loyalty will be much stronger.

Heightening innovation — By hiring employees with different perspectives, talents and skills, you create a better setting for creating innovative ideas and strategies.

Remember that implementing diversity goes beyond meeting a quota. Equal employment opportunity is about developing original ideas, thinking beyond your realm, and utilizing all the experiences your diverse workforce can bring.
